Chicken Farmers Protest against Dropping Prices of Chicken

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of Center for Food Agriculture and Advocacy Studies (Pataka) Yeka Hendra Fatika warned that the constant dropping value of live chickens could harm chicken farmers in the long run.
“The dropping prices of live chicken happened since October 2018 and needs to be noticed by the government,” said Yeka in a written statement on March 5.
Pataka’s observation revealed that the average price for live chicken in February 2019 reached Rp17,300 per kilogram, which is a drop compared to October 2018 that saw the commodity sold at Rp19,000 per kilogram.

“The dropping value of live chickens averages 8.6 percent each month. This clearly is a major blow to independent chicken farmers,” said Yeka who estimated that farmers are experiencing losses up to Rp2 trillion and is not a great situation considering the decreasing amount of independent farmers.
Previously reported, chicken farmers held a protest at Jakarta’s National Monument (Monas) and voiced their disappointment on the incredibly cheap prices of chicken at the market.
They demanded lawmakers to revise the country’s Livestock Law (UU Peternakan) to provide chicken farmers with adequate legal protection against unfair competition.
