KLHK Criticizes Aprindo's Paid Plastic Bag Movement

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK) criticized the paid disposable plastic bag movement, which they argued should not have been made into a business commodity.

“What KLHK puts forth is not the terminology of paid plastic bags, but to greatly reduce its use,” said Vivin Rosa, KLHK’s director general of dangerous waste (B3) management in a text message to Tempo on Sunday.

The paid disposable plastic bags movement KLHK refers to is the recent one heavily marketed by the Indonesian Retail Association (Aprindo) that simultaneously implemented non-free plastic bags starting from March 1, 2019.

In response, the KLHK mentioned about the similar movement introduced in 2016 which was eventually dropped because the ministry thought that the policy was too business-oriented.

As of the Aprindo movement on introducing paid disposable plastic bags, Vivin said that the KLHK was not officially notified prior to the program’s announcement.

Asked upon the future of the policy, Vivin said that there will be a minister’s decree upon reducing disposable plastic bags purely based on environmental reasons and will not be taken into the business context.
