PVMBG Issue Minimum Safe Distance from Active Mount Anak Krakatau

4 March 2019 07:16 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) issued an official warning for fishermen in its vicinity to avoid approaching Mount Anak Krakatau after a string of volcanic activities was detected generated by the mountain.

The mountain that had initially calmed significantly is now considered to be adequately active since late February 2019.

According to a member of the Mount Anak Krakatau observation post, Deni Mardiono, urged local residents living and engaged in activities in the mountain’s vicinity to keep a safe distance. He suggests that Anak Krakatau’s sudden seismic activities could possibly be accompanied by a sudden eruption that can be catastrophic.

“Mount Anak Krakatau is still active and shows seismic activities followed by an eruption. We ask residents conducting activities in its vicinity to keep a safe distance,” he said.

According to Deni, the closest safe distance from the mountain’s crater is at the five-kilometer perimeter. On February 28, the PVMBG detected 18 volcanic seismic activities coming from Anak Krakatau and 9 local tectonic earthquakes, and two distant tectonic quakes.
