TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister of Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution voiced doubts on the “facts” mentioned by opposition presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto in regard to the wealth of Indonesians kept overseas.
Prabowo previously claimed that it exceeds Rp11,000 trillion. In response, Darmin Nasution said that it is extremely difficult to test the truth behind the candidate’s claim.
The former Bank Indonesia governor Darmin acknowledged that there is a possibility of Indonesian's wealth remaining overseas especially if linked to the government’s tax amnesty in the past.
“That is a topic that is difficult to prove the actual nominal. But one of our real preventive measures was by introducing the tax amnesty that reduced [the overseas wealth] quite dramatically, I am honestly not sure if there are more left till this moment,” said Darmin during the Sixth Ministerial Meeting of The CPOPC in Jakarta on Thursday, Feb. 28.
When asked to predict the actual number, Darmin refused to answer and was reluctant to link the issue into the political realm. “What’s the potential? Well, I am not answering that if it's politically motivated,” he said.
