PT Freeport Indonesia Starts Sending its Mining Equipment Out

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nearing the end of the operations at Grasberg Open Pit in Tembagapura, Mimika, Papua, PT Freeport Indonesia has started to send back its mining equipment to overseas mining locations namely in South and North America.

 PT Freeport Indonesia spokesman Riza Pratama said that the company decided it would be less useful to keep equipment such as haul trucks in the Grasberg open pit since it has started it underground mining.

“I heard that the haul trucks being sent [to other locations]. Grasberg will expire soon. We are still in production but it will soon end to the final stages,” said Riza in Timika, Papua on Thursday, February 21.

According to the company’s export-import manager Edwin Kailola, starting from December 2018 they had flown 60 Komatsu type 930 mining trucks to their mine in Peru, South America.

He also said that they plan to do the same this year to its mining companies spread in the North American region. The gold, silver, and copper reserve contained in the Grasberg mine pit was discovered back in the 1980s and had started production in the 1990s.
