TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia has officially apply to host the 2032 Olympics. On Sunday, the Indonesian Ambassador in Bern, Swiis, Muliaman D. Hadad handed over a letter from President Joko Widodo to Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in Lausanne, Switzerland.
A copy of the letter was received by Thomas and he responded positively, especially after Indonesia's success during the Asian Games and Asian Paragames 2018.
President Widodo had verbally conveyed his wish for Indonesia to host the Olympic Games when Thomas Bach visited in 2018, to which the IOC responded well.
"The IOC recognizes Indonesia's capability during the successful implementation of the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Paragames. We feel this is a strong foundation," said Christophe Dubi, executive director of IOC.
The Indonesian Ambassador in Bern said that Indonesia's run as a candidate to host the 2032 Olympics is also a good opportunity to showcase the nation's economic capabilities, especially as the world's 4th largest population and member of the G-20.
The election process of the 2032 Olympics host will be held by no later than 2024. Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles will be the hosts for the Olympic Games in 2020, 2024 and 2028 respectively.
