TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Advocacy group Migrant Care executive director Wahyu Susilo, urged President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to reconsider his meeting with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The meeting is scheduled to take place next week in Indonesia.
"With a bad track record on Prince Salman's involvement in the killing of [Jamal] Khashoggi, Pak Jokowi should reconsider carrying out his personal meeting," said Wahyu to Tempo on Friday, February 15, 2019.
Wahyu referred to the recent murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, where many reports suggested that Prince Salman was involved in the incident. However, the Saudi Arabia Foreign Affairs Ministry continue to rebutt the claims.
Should the meeting takes place, Wahyu said that Jokowi "must have a high call to push for migrant worker protection and attempt to free Indonesian migrant workers that are threatened to receive capital punishment."
Wahyu revealed that Saudi Arabia sentenced 103 Indonesian nationals to death row from 2011 to 2018. As many as 85 of the Indonesians were able to be freed from death row, but five were executed.
Wahyu added that currently there are 13 Indonesians remain in Saudi Arabia's custody and are under the threat of death penalty. Wahyu explained that the Indonesian government is working to attempt to free the Indonesians.
