Malang Hit by Magnitude 5 Earthquake, No Tsunami Potential

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - A magnitude 5 earthquake shook Malang Regency, East Java, on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 2:58 local time. The meteorology and geophysics agency BMKG stated that there was no tsunami potential.
Head of BMKG’s earthquake and tsunami Rahmat Triyono said the tectonic quake occurred at 9.35 degree south latitude and 112.51 degrees east longitude. “It was centered at 134 kilometers of Kepanjen City, Malang, East Java, at the depth of 69 kilometer at the sea,” he said.
Thetremor was reported to havefelt in the area of Malang Regency, includingSelopuro, Wlingi, Blitarwiththeintensity of II-III MMI.
According to BMKG, therewere no immediatereports of damagecaused by thequake. Theearthquakedid not have the potentialfor a tsunami.
Based on BMKG’s monitoring, there was no aftershock recorded until 03:25. The agency called on the people to remain calm and not easily influenced by baseless information.
