Kaka Slank Rejects RUU Permusikan, Set to Meet Anang Hermansyah

12 February 2019 15:44 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In an attempt to reject the much-debated Draft Music Bill (RUU Permusikan), Musician Kaka Slank plans to meet legislative member Anang Hermansyah form the House of Representatives' (DPR) Commission X.

“I’ll meet him tonight. I plan to ask him about the musicians he met upon making the Bill,” said the vocalist of Indonesian legendary rock band 'Slank'  in Menteng, Jakarta today, February 12.

According to Kaka, the Draft Music Bill contains numerous decrees that go against musicians, especially the Article overseeing musician’s certifications, performing overseas, and others that hamper musician’s freedom of expression.

“I argue that many articles within the Draft bill must be dropped entirely. Creating this Bill is like cooking recipe, no need to include unnecessary flavors if it’s not needed,” said Kaka.

Kaka explained that there are many alternative Laws to protect musicians that already exist, such as the Law on Copyright (UU Hak Cipta). He also maintained that what is needed right now is firm enforcement of the Law.

“The element that directly affects musicians is piracy, the law enforcement against that must be firm. The Law does already exist, but it’s okay to introduce a new Draft Bill as long as it does not cross the line,” Kaka added.

Musicians' contra to the Draft Music Bill has formed a coalition named the National Coalition against RUU Permusikan (Koalisi Nasional Tolak RUU Permusikan) and has actively voiced their concern and rejection against the Bill.
