TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The second round of presidential debate slated for February 17, 2019, is expected to elucidate both candidate’s stance on many issues, particularly energy security.

Institute for Indonesia Local Policy Studies (ILPOS) researcher Broery Doro Pater Tjaja said Monday both presidential contenders should illuminate their visions and missions on the issues opted as the topics of the second debate, which were energy, food, infrastructure, natural resources and environment.

“Energy can be a topic that sparks a good debate since it can measure how far they support the issue that directly affects the lives of many,” said Broery.

He also expressed regrets on the first presidential debate, which he saw as an apparent attempt of attacks and display of self-righteousness before the camera.

“The essence of a debate is that it should politically educate all members of the society,” said Broery, who maintained that a presidential debate should reflect the candidates’ opinions, which consequently would affect their electability rates.
