Merapi Spewing 2-km of Hot Clouds

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Mount Merapi is giving off hot clouds. On Thursday evening, February 7, the volcano exhumes two kilometers of hot clouds for 215 seconds towards the Southeast. The Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) recorded the amplitude at 70.
"Merapi status is now at level II or on alert," BPPTKG Yogyakarta chief Hanik Humaida said on Friday, February 8.
As the hot clouds were emitted, light ash rain occurred—heading northeast towards the Boyolali region of Central Java.

Prior to the stream of hot clouds, from 00:00 to 06:00 there were also 17 recorded earthquakes of lava avalanches with a duration of 15-93 seconds.
BPPTKG urges the public to stay away from the summit—outside the three-kilometer radius; except for disaster mitigation activities. Residents in the Disaster Prone III area asked to increase alert.
The BPPTKG also recommends the closing of Mount Merapi's hiking trail except for the investigation and research purposes related to disaster mitigation.
"If there is a change in Mount Merapi's activity, we will immediately review it," said BPPTKG monitoring officer Kholik.
