Tangerang Verifies 464 People HIV/AIDS Positive

7 February 2019 19:10 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - Tangerang Health Department verified that a total of 464 people were infected by HIV/AIDS across 15 sub-districts. “65 percent of them are women, while the rest is men,” said the agency’s head of disease prevention and control, Hendra Tarmizi, Thursday, February 7.

Hendra said that most of the infected people lived in the coastal areas, namely Kosambi, Teluknaga, Sukadiri, Pasar Kemis, and Mauk district. Based on the data, the number of patients increased each year. In 2016, 390 people had been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, and the figure rose to 434 in 2017.

The main cause of the spread of HIV/AIDS in Tangerang Regency is free sex. The infected people are not only sex workers or their clients, but also employees, housewives, children, and fishermen.

To curb the spread of the deadly disease, Tangerang administration shut down a prostitution site located in Dadap, Kosambi district. However, the policy could not effectively decrease the spread.

Currently, Tangerang administration conducts a preventive measure along with activists by disseminating the transmission and dangerous of HIV/AIDS to the public.
