TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Legal and Human Rights Ministry is currently reviewing the remission granted to I Nyoman Susrama, a murderer of the daily Radar Bali journalist AA Gde Bagus Narendra Prabangsa.

“It’s being discussed,” said the ministry’s Director General of Correctional Services Sri Puguh Budi Utami in Jakarta, Friday, February 1.

Sri said that the discussion involved several experts, yet she stopped short to detail the reason and when the evaluation will complete. “We will see it later, [we’ll] meet experts,” she added.

Nyoman Susrama was sentenced a lifetime in jail after the Denpasar District Court found him guilty for killing Prabangsa. The murder was triggered by news reports issued in Radar Bali that highlighted alleged corruption cases in Bangli Education Agency.

However, based on the Presidential Decree No. 29/2018-2019, Susrama along with other 114 convicts were granted temporary imprisonment from the initial lifetime sentence.

The clemency sparked protests from journalists and human rights activists. The Independent Journalists Alliance (AJI) of Jakarta deemed the decision of President Jokowi was against the justice for the victim’s relatives and the Indonesian journalists.
