Imam Nahrawi Calls on Cinema to Play Indonesia Raya

TEMPO.CO, JakartaYouth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi has appealed to operators of movie theaters across Indonesian regions to play the national anthem Indonesia Raya before the film begins. The appeal, noted on a circular letter No. 1.30.1/Menpora/I/2019, was spread on social media.

“Yes, it’s correct, the letter is true,” said the ministry secretary-general Gatot S. Dewabroto when Tempo asked for confirmation, Thursday, January 31.

Gatot explained that Minister Imam Nahrawi issued the policy in a bid to improve the nationalism and encourage the young generation to be proud of and loyal to the country.

He asserted that the circular is merely an appeal and no coercion is used. “It can be applied or not. There is no legal consequence,” said Gatot.

Gatot claimed to have not yet heard from Minister Imam Nahrawi for further information regarding the matter, including specific reasons of the call.

The circular letter that appealing movie theaters to play Indonesia Raya takes effect since the date issuance which is inked by Minister Imam Nahrawi on January 30, 2019.
