VP Jusuf Kalla on His Retirement and Today's Business Climate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that he could already imagine his retirement from the current position set to arrive on October 20, 2019. He asserted that he would continue to serve the country in numerous studies after his retirement.

Insha Allah (God willing), I will be active in academic, peace processes, and maybe give public talks to boost the development of the business world,” said Jusuf Kalla at the ‘Kadin Talk’ event in Jakarta today, Jan. 31.

The vice president highlighted the fact that there will always be an end to a journey, which is the same as his tenure in the government. However, he maintained that he would not continue as a businessman anymore because of the changing business climate compared to what it used to be.

“Someone like me cannot comprehend the [current] business world. A company that doesn’t profit but can continuously increase its value bewilders me. Back in our times, if [a company] endures losses, the value would also follow suit. But now it’s the other way around,” said the Vice President who also served the same position under former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s administration.

Moreover, Jusuf Kalla admitted that he no longer qualified to be in the mix of the current business climate and said that it was time for the younger generation to take over.
