TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manpower Minister Hanif Dhakiri said the number of foreign workers (TKA) up to December 2018 reached 95,335 people, and that the figure was still at a safe level and under control.
He added the number was relatively small when compared to other countries'. For example, he said, the number of TKA in Singapore reached one-fifth of its population, while Qatar's was higher than its population.
“Thus, the number of foreign workers in Indonesia truly remains under control so there is no need to worry,” said Hanif in a written statement received by Tempo, Friday, January 25.

Hanif explained foreign citizens who were willing to be employed in the country must meet various requirements, such as employment and living permits, education level, competence, and for certain positions and locations. Besides, he added, each worker was obliged to pay tax worth US$100 per month.
The minister continued to explain that the government would take stern actions against foreign workers who committed violations. All administrative officials, starting from the immigration, the police, and local governments, would conduct frequent monitoring of the workers' whereabouts.
