Govt Hints on Massive Crackdown on Books Related to Communism

24 January 2019 14:02 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu expressed his support for the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) that suggested to hold a massive government crackdown against books containing banned ideologies and communist views that are sold publically.

“Communism is banned. It wouldn’t be a problem if they never did anything,” said Ryamizard at the Presidential Palace complex today on Thursday, January 24.

The massive raid, he said, is meant to suppress the sense of vengeance from people related to the extinct Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).

“This is a matter of vengeance. PKI members are vengeful,” he said. “We have to suppress it now before it gets larger and harder [to control].”

Previously, Ryamizard said he is not bothered by the fact that communism is currently still adopted by Russia or China and maintains that it is the uprising and revolts that usually follow. “Just a reminder, we have faced three PKI uprisings in the past in 1926, 1948, and 1965,” he asserted.

Attorney General Muhammad Prasetyo suggested the massive book raid after the recent findings by the National Armed Forces (TNI) of allegedly banned communist books that were sold freely in a book store located at Jalan Brawijaya in Kediri District.
