Mount Agung Erupts 2 Kilometer Volcanic Ash Cloud

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reported that Bali’s Mount Agung erupted again today on Tuesday, January 22, at 03:42 Central Indonesia Time (WITA), that created a 2-kilometer high ash cloud.

PVMBG Head Kasbani said that the observable thick ash cloud tends to head eastward and southeast. The agency’s seismograph recorded maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters for 2 minutes and 25 seconds.

Mount Agung is currently still under alert status III has a 4-kilometer no-go zone in its vicinity.

The active mountain started to spew ash clouds since November 21, 2017, with its latest eruption taking place today on January 22, 2019. Other than that, Mount Dukono and Ibu Mountain located in Halmahera had erupted on Monday, January 21.

The PVMBG is constantly monitoring 69 out of 127 active volcanic mountains but those with a level II status comprise of: Mount Agung, Mount Soputan and Karangetang in North Sulawesi, and Lampung’s Mount Anak Krakatau.
