TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Muslim Lawyer Team (TPM) said that the sole reason Abu Bakar Baasyir initially rejected his own parole was that he believes he is innocent and had not been involved in acts of terrorism as he was accused of.
According to one member of the TPM, Achmad Michdan, the initial parole offered to Abu Bakar Baasyir forced him to sign a deal and admit that he was involved in acts of terror that he is being accused of. Other requirements include showing remorse, to never repeat his violation, and sign a pledge to the NKRI.

“How would you expect Baasyir to sign it when the first point itself forces him to admit guilt,” said Achmad on Monday.
Furthermore, Baasyir’s lawyer Mahendradatta said that he is unaware of the legal foundation behind the release. He did not provide any answers when asked if Abu Bakar Baasyir will be granted parole or unconditional release.
“Yusril said that it is an unconditional release,” said Mahendradatta.
Abu Bakar Baasyir was imprisoned for acts of terrorism since 2011 after he was found guilty of persuasion and mobilizing another group of people to conduct acts of terrorism.
