TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yusril Ihza Mahendra said convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Baasyir has a fundamental right to be granted his parole which does not clash with any laws. He explained that Baasyir was actually eligible for parole since December 2018.
The lawyer for the Jokowi – Ma’ruf Amin campaign team then said that many people still fail to understand that fact; “It’s quite normal arguments arose prior to Abu Bakar Baasyir’s release. Maybe the people that argue are those that failed to comprehend the situation.”

According to Yusril, Baasyir’s chance for parole came after he had undergone 2/3rd of his prison sentence. But one requirement to receive that parole was not met by Baasyir after he refused to sign an agreement to be loyal to The Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
He then revealed that Abu Bakar Baasyir chose to only pledge his life for God (Allah) and be faithful to Islam.
Yusril also acknowledged that it is normal for people to assume that Baasyir’s release is politically motivated considering that it lies on the decision of the State Leader.
However, he defends that it is not against the law that denies the possibility of parole for convicts of terrorism, corruption, and narcotics cases. Yusril Ihza Mahendra said that Abu Bakar Baasyir already served his time prior to the creation of that law.
