Yusril and Jokowi`s Discussion on Freeing Abu Bakar Baasyir

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yusril Ihza Mahendra revealed his conversation with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo about freeing the convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Baasyir.
The legal advisor for incumbent presidential and vice presidential candidate Jokowi – Ma’ruf Amin previously reported to President Jokowi about Abu Bakar’s unwillingness to sign a letter of allegiance to the Pancasila.
The pledge was one of the requirements to receive his parole after 2/3rd of his total prison sentence. However, Baasyir refused to sign the pledge.

Yusril then advised Jokowi to produce a win-win solution regarding the freedom of Abu Bakar Baasyir.
“I agree that this is based on humanitarian reasons, we must find a solution considering that his old age and suffering from diseases. The second reason is that I do not have the heart witnessing Ulamas being behind bars for a long period of time,” said Yusril, reiterating what Jokowi said to him.
In the end, Yusril revealed, the requirements for Abu Bakar Baasyir`s freedom was loosened and agreed upon which did not mandate him to pledge allegiance to Islam rather than Pancasila, since both Yusril and Jokowi agreed that Pancasila coincides with Islam.
