TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has prepared vocational education to meet demand of employees for the New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) in Kulon Progo that would start operation in April.

"The government helps the development of vocational education for the new airport in Kulon Progo," Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution said during a visit to the Kulon Progo Training Center (BLK) in Yogyakarta on Saturday, Jan. 19.

Darmin explained the international airport would facilitate access for the people, increase economic growth, and provide jobs especially for the surrounding community.

Therefore, the readiness of local human resources through the training center was important as the airport required new skilled workers that were suitable for their requirement.

The skilled workers would support the performance of the tourism sector.

The new local workers have been prepared through the Kulon Progo Training Center that became one of the pilot projects for revitalizing training center around the airport, to meet the needs of the industry with quality and competent human resources with added value.

Kulon Progo training center is expected to help farmers, whose land were converted into airport complex, to change their livelihood and become high-skilled workers to improve their welfare, the minister remarked.

Currently there are 285 participants in the training center who have received training related to airport operations such as ticketing reservations, cargo handling, porter handling and customer service.

The international airport is expected to create jobs for 15,000 people and reduce unemployment in Kulon Progo.
