TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s presidential election running-mate Ma’ruf Amin claims he will focus to improve the country's agricultural industry if he gets elected in the upcoming election.
He argues that introducing agricultural value-added processed goods will be able to help boost the welfare of Indonesian farmers.
“Not only selling raw products, but farmers can make it into processed products that can be sold with a higher economic value,” said Ma’ruf Amin on Sunday in his visit to Parangpong, West Bandung.

Ma’ruf gave an example of Indonesia’s coffee products that are only able to sell dried green coffee beans up to Rp75,000/ kilogram before foreign buyers turn these coffee beans into its final product, which in some cases can be sold more than Rp50,000 for just one cup.
He said that his example undermined the fact that foreign buyers can generate an outstandingly large profit than the coffee farmers themselves.
“Which is why farmers must have the skills and mindset to create value-added products,” said Ma’ruf Amin.
