TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that Gatot Subroto Air Force Base of Indonesian Military (TNI AD) in Way Kanan District, Lampung, would start its operational for civil aviation in March 2019.
“We hope to start the operation in March,” said Budi in a written statement Tempo received on Thursday, January 17.
Former president director of state-owned airport operator AP II said that the ministry would expedite the preparation of the operation within three months. Budi Karya underlined that the security factor is the most fundamental aspect before the operation starts.
Budi explained the air base was chosen because of its strategic location to reach several districts of Lampung Province and South Sumatra.
The ministry has established intense communication and coordination with several related stakeholders, especially the Indonesian Military. Budi Karya mentioned that the ATR aircraft with a capacity of 72 passengers would be operated in Gatot Subroto Air Force Base to serve Way Kanan - Palembang and Way Kanan - Jakarta route and vice versa.
