Street Vendors in Tanah Abang Area Clash with Satpol PP

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A riot broke out at Jakarta’s Tanah Abang market area between the city’s Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) and street vendors today. Reportedly, the vendors at Jatibaru Raya Street were unwilling to be cleaned out of the public street.
“Members of the Satpol PP immediately came and forcefully confiscated the vendors’ belongings that were posted at the sidewalks along Jatibaru Raya,” said one of the street vendors that declined to be identified.

Despite selling their goods on sidewalks, the traders argue Satpol PP’s disciplining is unnecessary and maintains that they did not cover the path of the yellow guiding block meant for people with disabilities. The street vendor refuses to be relocated and defends that they have paid a rent to trade over the sidewalk there.
The brief clash with Satpol PP members first sparked at 11:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). Police are now seen securing the area in Tanah Abang in an attempt to prevent another clash.
