TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan demanded the central government restudy the giant sea wall project to prevent issues in the future.
“It (the project) must be reviewed because many studies question the function of the giant sea wall,” said Anies Baswedan in the City Hall, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, January 16.
Anies Baswedan stopped short to detail studies in question. Yet, he said that Jakarta bay is different than any other bays in other regions. According to him, as many as 13 rivers flow to the northern Jakarta, and so thorough study is required for the policy-making.
Besides, Anies feared the water entering the land was trapped due to the giant levee which, Anies opined, would potentially generate problems, meaning the capital city could be inundated.
“We support and establish dike projects in coastal areas. As for other than those (giant sea wall), we have to analyze it thoroughly,” Anies Baswedan noted.
The Public Works and Housing Ministry was currently developing the giant sea wall as national capital integrated coastal development (NCICD). The ministry’s special staff on water resources, Firdaus Ali, on December 11, 2018, claimed that his side expects the project groundbreaking would start in 2020 after essential studies complete in 2019.
Ali explained the study on the giant sea wall project will involve not only Jakarta city administration, but also Banten and West Java government. Many experts from the Netherlands, Korea, Japan, and of course Indonesia will together study the giant embankment which aimed at tackling tidal flooding in Jakarta.
