TEMPO.CO, Bandung - A researcher of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Mardiyati, produced an alternative filament from plastic waste, bottled mineral water and its cap, as a material of 3D printing. Her study was entitled Preparation of 3D Printing Filament Made From Thermoplastic Waste.

She conducted the study due to the high price of the filament type ABS and PLA in markets. The lecturer at Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering made an idea to create filament material from plastic waste. The filament is a material used to print 3D object.

“Why don’t we try to make our own filament from plastic waste?,” said Mardiyati as quoted from ITB website, Tuesday, January 15.

Demands on filament material for 3D printing is increasing. Besides, the material must be imported and costly. Mardiyati strived to produce the material from plastic waste, bottle caps made of Polypropylene and bottled mineral water made of PET, throughout 2016-2018 in Green Polymer Laboratory. The result had been patented.

Other than producing an alternative filament for 3D printing, Mardiyati along with Green Polymer Laboratory team run a study on plastic waste, for example, recycle plastic waste into craft material and child education props which are displayed in the Embassy of Netherland.
