TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Political observer from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Syamsuddin Haris regrets that General Election Commission (KPU) has limited the number of cases eligible to be used in the upcoming presidential debate.
Syamsuddin maintained that without specifically mentioning certain cases, the debate would be left as a ceremonial event.
“The presidential debate is expected to discuss normative issues rather than substantive ones. It should have been able to see what solution Jokowi and the number two candidate has to offer in overcoming human rights issues,” he said on Tuesday at the LIPI Headquarters.

Previously reported, the KPU asked that each presidential and vice presidential candidate avoid bringing-up certain cases during the presidential debate set to be held this week.
KPU Commissioner Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi at his office on Friday fears that candidates bringing up certain sensitive cases would possibly spark controversy and disrupt the planned agenda meant to accommodate the candidates’ vision and mission to the public.
