Lava Flows; Public Advised to Steer Clear of Merapi

14 January 2019 10:26 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Center for Investigation and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG) recorded six lava flows on Mount Merapi Sunday night, January 13. The lava fell towards the upstream region of Gendol River.

"From 19.:50 to 21:21 we noted six outpourings towards the upper reaches of Gendol Rivie with a slide distance of 200-600 meters." BPPTKG announced through its official Twitter account, Monday, January 14.

The volcano's activity level was recorded at level 2 with alert status. Residents are asked not to be within a radius of three kilometers from the peak of Merapi.

The BPPTKG also discourages hiking and climbing, except for the investigation and research purposes related to disaster mitigation efforts.

On Monday, the Merapi Observation Post (PGM) of Ngepos stated that the volcano looked foggy with cloudy weather.

The lava drop slid from Merapi's crater over a duration of 35-86 seconds. The volume of lava domes last reached 439,000 cubic meters with a growth rate of 3,400 cubic meters per day, or smaller than in the previous week.

Currently, Mount Merapi`s lava dome is still stable with a low growth rate averaging at less than 20,000 cubic meters per day.
