TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The Communication and Informatics Minister Rudiantara explained that 5G technology must be brought into Indonesia in 2019. He conveyed the statement during his visit to the Alibaba Cloud data center inauguration at Hotel Mulia in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, January 9.

According to Rudiantara, Indonesia still lacks business models on 5G technologies that have two purposes; consumers and industry. Therefore, he said that the country needs to build a 5Gnetwork that is more commercial.

“It might be implemented in industries based on business strategies,” he said. As for consumers, the minister asked whether consumers would be willing to pay for a facility that would be several times more efficient before bringing it here.

The Kominfo Director General of Resources and Postal Device and Informatics said that Indonesia should follow closely Japan and South Korea’s footsteps in using 5G technology. However, this would not mean that Indonesia would entirely get rid of the 3G and 4G network.
