TEMPO.CO, Denpasar - Management of Bali Airport, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, said that it had served 23.7 million passengers in 2018, increased 13 percent compared to that in 2017.
“Of that number, 52.8 percent were passengers from international routes and 47.2 percent were passengers from domestic routes,” said Yanus Suprayogi, General Manager of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar on Thursday, January 3.
He continued that the second busiest airport in Indonesia serves nearly two million passengers per month averagely or around 65,100 people per day. The number of aircraft carrying passengers to Bali also increased to 162,623 aircraft, increased 11.1 percent compared to last year.
The average percentage increase in the number of passengers from 2015 to 2018 reached 11.7 percent and for the aircraft statistics, during that period, increased 8.8 percent.
The increase was inseparable from the many international activities conducted in Bali in 2018, including the annual IMF and World Bank meetings and the World Ocean Conference (OOC).
To accommodate the need, Bali Airport manager had also developed a number of facilities, including extra 10 aircraft parking lots which were expected to contribute to an extra 2 million passengers.
Yanus considered the number of passengers reaching 23.7 million had reached the airport’s maximum capacity.
Angkasa Pura I Managing Director, Faik Fahmi, said that one of the plans to increase the capacity of the airport is the extension of the 400-meter runway to 3,400 meters.
With the extension of the runway, Bali Airport is expected to be able to accommodate the largest aircraft, such as the Airbus A-380 which can carry more than 500 people. Faik said that the runway extension is targeted for completion in 2022-2023.
