TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Environmental Agency head Isnawa Adji said the gubernatorial decree on the limitation of plastic use would be soon ratified by Governor Anies Baswedan. The draft bill has been already on Anies’s desk.
“It only awaits the signature [of Anies]. No restraint,” said Isnawa when met in Sunter, North Jakarta, Wednesday, January 2. He expected the bill would be inked this week.
Isnawa explained his side would not directly execute the regulation by banning the use of plastic, yet dissemination to the public and entrepreneurs would be kicked off first for six months or until June 2019.
Anies Baswedan previously said the city agency along with Gerakan Indonesia Diet Kantong Plastik Indonesia (GIDKPI) invited representatives of traditional markets, retail entrepreneurs, and schools to discuss the regulation concerning plastic use.
“It’s been long discussed. What we have prepared is not merely a prohibition, but also its stages, because it involves behavior reformation in society,” said Anies in Monas, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, December 19, 2018.
Isnawa remarked the decree would prohibit the use of disposable plastic such as plastic bags and straws. He pinned hope the regulation would decrease the quantity of plastic waste in the capital city and appealed the public to utilize reusable grocery bags.
