Commercial Air Crash Deaths Rocket in 2018

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Aviation Safety Network (ASN) reported that the number of casualties from commercial air crash accidents soared in 2018 compared to 2017 with death toll reaching 556.
One of the worst was the most recent Lion Air flight JT610 crash over Indonesian waters, which claimed 189 lives. This is a stark contrast to 2017’s 44 deaths caused by commercial air accidents, which marked the year’s history-long safety record.

The ASN recorded 15 fatal incidents throughout 2018 across the globe, ranging from Lion Air’s Boeing 737 Max crash, the crash in Cuba in May that killed 112 people, the Zagros crash in Iran that killed 66 people in February 2018, and the plane crash at Kathmandu Airport in Nepal that killed 51 people.
Despite the casualties, air transportation can still be considered as the safest means of transport for the past 20 years. ASN’s Harro Ranter said that if the number of incidents remained the same as 10 years ago, there would have been 39 fatal air accidents last year.

However, an airplane’s loss of control became the focus of air transportation safety considering that it has become the cause of at least 10 out of 25 fatal incidents in the past five years.
