Terror Group East Indonesia Mujahidin Grows Post-tsunami

2 January 2019 18:52 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ideological Islamic Analyst Community director Harits Abu Ulya suspected that members of the terror group known as the East Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) led by Ali Kolara in Poso had grown following the tsunami and earthquake that hit Palu, Central Sulawesi.

“There are indications that members of this group have increased following the tsunami that hit Palu [to 20 people] whereas it was less than that before the disaster,” said Harits in a written statement today.

Despite this, Harits said that the group posed a minor threat in terms of weaponry and was only capable in their knowledge of the mountainous terrains in the location.

However, the group’s leader, Ali Tokara, is known for his hatred toward Indonesia’s authorities, especially the special detachment 88 anti-terror team. This is what led him to commit the mutilation of a local in Parimo, Central Sulawesi, on Monday, December 31.

The terror group opened fire on a group of security personnel who were attempting to clear a street that was blocked by a tree log. A gunfight then ensued, in which two policemen, Chief Brigadier Andrew and Brigadier 2nd Class Baso, were injured.
