Rupiah Gains to Exceed 14,400/US$ Mark

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah-US dollar interbank rate in Jakarta (JISDOR) strengthened on Monday morning, January 2. The rupiah shot up to its highest exchange rate against the US dollar since last year, breaking the 14,400/US$ mark.

The rupiah managed to open the year with a 90-bps gain to trade for 14,380 per US dollar.

The rupiah gain is largely attributable to market player's expectation over the government's ability to control inflation.

Samuel Sekuritas economist Ahmad Mikail said that domestic sentiments regarding inflation is a positive factor for the rupiah movement.

"Inflations are expected to have stayed low in December 2018, and that could serve as a positive sentiment for capita inflows to the Indonesian bonds market," he said here on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, undesirable situations in US politics, including the government shutdown and expectations that the Fed Rate will not be raised twice this year, added pressure to the greenback thus allowing the rupiah a chance to appreciate further.
