Tangerang-Merak Toll Returns to Normal After Sunda Strait Tsunami

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - PT Marga Mandalasakti said that the traffic flow through the Tangerang - Merak toll road was normal after the Sunda Strait tsunami hit the coast of Banten and Lampung.
“It does not significantly affect traffic conditions during the Christmas and 2019 New Year holiday period,” said PT Marga Mandalasakti’s Head of Legal and Public Relations Division Indah Permanasari in a written statement, in Jakarta, Wednesday, January 2.
On December 22, at 9:30 pm, the Sunda Strait tsunami swept parts of Banten and Lampung provinces.
According to BNPB data on December 29, the tsunami caused 431 people dead, 15 people missing, 7,200 injured and 46,646 people evacuated.
Based on data noted by PT Marga Mandalasakti, the number of vehicles passing on Christmas was 116,318. It dropped 18.87 percent from the normal daily average of 143,372 vehicles.
Similarly, when compared to the 2017 Christmas period, which was 122,287 vehicles or dropped by five percent.
However, in the year-end holiday period, the Tangerang-Merak Toll Road noted the highest achievement with the number of vehicles on December 27, which was 154,220 or increased 7.57 percent compared to the daily average.
“This also increased, from a prediction of 0.5 percent. We predict a six percent increase in the number of vehicles ahead of the reverse flow of the new year holiday on January 5, 2019,” Indah said.
