TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) to close the hiking route of Mount Semeru on January 3, 2019, with the rainy season as the main consideration since it could lead to potential landslides and tree falls.
“The closure is done as an anticipative measure against unwanted things that could lead to loss of lives,” said the Semeru National Park spokesman Syarif Hidayat on Thursday, December 27. He mentioned that the closure will last until further notice.
According to Syarif, high-intensity rain is expected to affect the area starting from January to April of 2019. Another reason behind the closure of Mount Semeru's hiking route is that it would give a chance for the forest area’s vegetation to heal itself naturally and let the animals roam freely, which Syarif said is deeply essential.
During the Christmas holidays, Mount Semeru was one of the country's favorite location since it attracted 2,100 visitors on December 23-24.
