Bali Starts to Implement Its Plastic Ban

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bali Provincial Government has started to actively disseminate the Governor’s Decree No. 97/2018 upon banning the use of disposable plastics, which was introduced on December 21.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster himself explained that the decree mainly regulates the ban across several daily items made out of plastics such as plastic bags, Styrofoam, and plastic straws.

“We gave producers, businesses, and suppliers of disposable plastic products to adjust their business plans after the decree was made effective,” said Governor Koster in the event that was also attended by Bali’s regional agency leaders.

The governor’s decree, he said, is mainly to maintain the sanctity, harmony, and to present a sense of balance in Bali ecosystem. He also said that it is meant to prevent further environmental damage caused by the overuse of disposable plastic products, mainly the issue related to plastic waste.

The Bali Governor explained that his administration has formed a dedicated team that will be tasked to educate, assist, and provide consultation on practicing the ban on disposable plastics. This team comprises of regional agency staff, non-government agencies, entrepreneurs, religious and public figures.
