Jokowi, Anies Baswedan Talk on Jakarta River Expansion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan discussed a plan to expand Jakarta rivers in a bid to anticipate floods in the capital. According to Anies, several city rivers experienced constriction.
“Mr. President calls it a normalization [program]. Yesterday, we discussed ratio of several rivers that experience narrowing,” said Anies in City Hall, Central Jakarta, Thursday, December 27.
Anies said the narrowing potentially raise the water surface. Thus, the government should complete the land acquisition to widen the river ratio.
One of the focus of the city administration is the land acquisition in Bidara Cina, Jatinegara, East Jakarta which is required to build a new stream in a bid to divide the water discharge from the upstream Ciliwung River to the East Flood Kanal (KBT).
Anies said the land acquisition is still in process. “Hopefully, on Monday [31 Dec] we will have a special meeting for the matter,” he added.
Jokowi and Anies Baswedan talked on the river expansion while monitoring Sukamahi and Ciawi dams in Bogor, December 26. The President believed the completion of both dams would reduce potential flood by 30 percent in the capital city.
