Police Chief Aims to Increase the Number of Policewomen in 2019

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Police Chief General Tito Karnavian lamented on the lack of policewomen in the Indonesian police which currently constitutes to 8.3 percent (36,595) of the entire police force.
As a comparison, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and the United Nations Population Fund said that there is currently 131.88 million female in Indonesia.
“I personally am not satisfied by this number. Has yet to represent the principle of emancipation and equality,” said Tito Karnavian in the institution’s year-end report at the Indonesian Police main headquarters in South Jakarta today.
Tito deems that female personnel is valuable members of the police institution which tend to have the ability to better approach witnesses, victims, or suspects undergoing legal procedures. He also claims that women are less prone to corrupt behaviors.
2018 sees members of the police amount to 443,379 personnel, which is an increase of 186 personnel compared to the previous year. General Tito Karnavian voiced his intention to increase that number through inclusive female recruitments in 2019.
