BMKG Installs 6 Seismometers Around Mount Anak Krakatau

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has installed six modified seismometers to further monitor the activities of Mount Anak Krakatau such as possible future landslides that triggered the Sunda Strait tsunami on Saturday.

“BMKG has installed six special seismometers that will be used to closely monitor the activities of Mount Anak Krakatau,” said BMKG Chairman Dwikorita Karnawati at the BMKG headquarters on Tuesday, December 25.

This step is deemed as the most effective way to be able to immediately monitor the mountain’s activities. Dwikorita said that another eruption and landslide still pose future threats in the region.

The modified sensors are designed to be able to detect micro vibrations such as the magnitude 3.4 tremor that is believed to have triggered the sudden tsunami in Sunda Strait.

“The tsunami early warning will be triggered once the sensors detect 3.4 in Richter scale tremors,” Dwikorita explained. She also said that the early warning will be dropped if a tsunami does not actually occur one hour after the warnings were issued.

Currently, the BMKG strongly advises local residents to avoid a distance of 500-meter to one kilometer from the coastline.
