Ahok Granted Christmas Remission, Expects to be Free in January

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of the high profile inmates that is set to have his prison time reduced by the 2018 Christmas remission is former Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama who will rightfully be granted up to three months and 15 days prison sentence reduction.
“He will be free on January 2019 based on calculations of his imprisonment on May 9, 2017,” said Ade Kusmanto, Correctional Services Directorate General spokesman on December 25.

Ahok was incriminated for the speech he gave at the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) back in 2016. His speech had violated the nation’s notorious blasphemy law and saw him sentenced to 2 years imprisonment at the Police Mobile Brigade Command Center (Mako BRIMOB) since May 9, 2017.
Ahok is one of the 11,232 Christian inmates who received prison sentence reduction during Christmas day this year. As much as 160 inmates will be eligible for an immediate release after receiving the remission.
