BNPB: Sunda Strait Tsunami Death Toll Increases to 281 People

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted the death toll from the Sunda Strait tsunami as of Monday morning increased to 281 people.

“The temporary data collected by BNPB Command Post until Monday at 7:00 am, noted 281 people died, 1,016 people were injured, 57 people were missing,” said Head of BNPB’s Data and Information Center spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in his written statement on Monday, December 24.

Sutopo said that the Sunda Strait tsunami also caused 11,687 people evacuated, 611 houses damaged, 69 hotel-villa units damaged, 60 shops damaged, and 420 ships damaged.

Sutopo continued the tsunami-affected area covered five regencies. The coastal areas along the coast from Carita Beach, Panimbang Beach, Teluk Lada Beach, Sumur Beach, and Tanjung Lesung Beach were severely damaged.

According to Sutopo, the most victims were found at Mutiara Hotel Carita Cottage, Tanjung Lesung Hotel, and Sambolo Village.

In Serang Regency, 12 people died, 30 people were injured and 28 people were missing. In South Lampung Regency, Sutopo continued, there were 60 people dead, 230 people injured, 22 people missing and 30 houses damaged. In Tanggamus Regency, 1 person died, 4 houses were severely damaged, and 70 boats were damaged. And in Pesawaran Regency, 1 person died, 1 person was injured, 231 people were evacuated, 134 houses were damaged and 14 boats were damaged.

According to Sutopo, the data could increase because the officers were still carrying out data collection.

“The possibility of victims’ data and damage will still increase considering that not all have been successfully recorded. Data collection is still being carried out by officers,” he said.

Sutopo said that the evacuation of victims of the Sunda Strait tsunami was still being carried out by the joint team coupled with the help of 7 units of excavators, 12 units of dump trucks, 2 units of loaders. In mobilization to the disaster site, 1 excavator unit, 1 dozer, 1 loader, 1 grader, 2 trucks, and 4 dump trucks were deployed.
