No Damage Done to Merak-Bakauheni Port by Tsunami: Ministry

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry has confirmed no damages to Merak-Bakauheni ferry port facilities following the Sunda Strait tsunami that hit the districts of Pandeglang, Serang and South Lampung on Saturday at around 9:27 p.m. local time.

"As of now, there is no report of damages to the facilities in Banten and Lampung provinces. Nor was there officer of the Transportation Ministry who fell victim of the disaster," the ministry`s Director General of Land Transportation Budi Setiyadi said in a statement on Sunday.

Budi has offered his condolences to the victims of the tsunami that killed at least 60 people.

"I have ordered the establishment of posts on the sites, to give continuous helps and services for the affected residents. I have also asked the director of transportation and multimode (AMM) to work in coordination with the ferry operator PT ASDP Indonesia to map the impact of the tsunami and provide helps for the victims," he said.

The Merak, Bakauheni ports have run normally following the tsunami, but the ministry`s Land Transportation Operator (BPTD) has continued to coordinate with the climatology agency to ensure a safe weather for shipping.

As many as 31 ferries have been operated in the Merak-Bakauheni route to serve holiday makers during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
