TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs, Luhut Pandjaitan said the construction of the New Yogyakarta International Airport or NYIA Airport Kulonprogo is targeted to complete by the beginning of 2020. Luhut said the construction process has reached 22 percent.
“I have received a report from the Regent, the project leader, PT PP, from all agencies, that on April 7, 8, or 9 in 2019, the airport would be operable for aircraft with international routes to land,” Luhut said in a statement received by Tempo, Thursday, December 20.
Minister Luhut Pandjaitan explained that the NYIA Airport runway was designed to accommodate big aircraft such as Airbus 388 and Boeing 777. He said, to date, the Boeing 777 could only land at Adi Sutjipto Airport, Yogyakarta.

The minister added that the construction of the NYIA Airport also absorbed a lot of labor, especially the local community. Luhut explained that based on information received from the local regent, the construction of the NYIA Airport could reduce unemployment by 1.9 percent.
“The Regent reported that there was a decrease in unemployment by half, from 3.8 percent to 1.9 percent. This is a very good value for the region,” he said.
The construction of the NYIA Airport, he said, employs 2,200 people, and will increase to 6,000 in January.
“The airport has also recruited 500 flight attendants, and there are 2,000 employees who have participated in various training organized by the company,” said Luhut Pandjaitan.
