TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi paid a visit to the Soekarno Hatta Airport in Cengkareng to supervise the series of ramp checks on commercial passenger airplanes. The check is one of the government's safety precautions prior to the Christmas and New Years' festivity.
After completing the ramp checks, Budi stated that 160 out of 450 (35.5 percent) airplanes there have gone through this mandatory ramp check.
"I was present in today's checks. There were only minor issues which show that our maintenance system is relatively good," said the Minister on Saturday, December 15, 2018.
Two most popular modes of transportation during the holiday season is air and sea transportation, which is why airline carriers have increased its flight slots and opened extra routes heading to Medan, Pontianak, East Nusa Tenggara, Bali, Ambon, and Papua.
Budi later confirmed that he has ordered ministry personnel to increase their speed and complete 70 percent ramp checks on all commercial airplanes before December 22, or three days before Christmas.
