TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Entering the third month of the presidential election campaign, Political Literacy Institute Executive Director Gun Gun Heryanto, said that presidential and vice presidential hopefuls exhibited poor dialectics.
Gun Gun said that the verbal aggressiveness and argumentativeness dominated both parties as a means to delegitimize opponents, which has been the main point of the campaign.
"Verbal aggressiveness dominated [the campaign] by attacking the other candidate. Attacking the ideas and dignity of another person in order to delegitimize," said Gun Gun in a discussion held at D'Consulate Resto&Lounge in Jakarta on Saturday, December 15, 2018.
The State-Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Political Communication lecturer said that campaigns should be an integral moment for electoral contestation and should have an educational aspect for the larger part of society.
From a democratic viewpoint, Gun Gun argued that presidential campaigns must involve the element of value that highlights a candidate's ideas, actions, feelings, and many more instead of verbal aggressiveness that arguably paved the way for hoaxes and hate speech.
