TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Informatics Ministry's Anang Achmad Latif was called out by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani after making a joke which the minister considered sexist.
"I accept her criticism as a positive feedback for me personally," said Anang when Tempo contacted him on Friday, December 14, 2018. Anang Achmad Latif is the Communication and Informatics Ministry's Information and Telecommunication Accessibility (BAKTI) President Director.
The incident happened at the Digitalization of Ultra-Micro Financing (UMi) launch event at the Finance Ministry's office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, December 12, 2018.
Anang gave an opening speech representing his ministry and made a joke urging married male attendees to reduce the number of work visits in fear of having their wives marrying again at home.
After Anang finished his speech, it was Sri Mulyani's turn to deliver her speech and as soon as she took the stage, she said; "I think that is a very sexist joke and I state this as my support for women in preserving their dignity and not just as an object."
Not only Anang, Sri Mulyani also mentioned Finance Ministry Director General of Treasury Marwanto Harjowiryono for not including women in the UMi promotion video. Sri argued that activists of the ultra-micro financing were in fact, mostly women.
