BPTJ Suggests Prolonged Odd-even Policy, pending ERP

14 December 2018 19:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Greater Jakarta Transportation chief Bambang Prihartono has advised the Jakarta administration to prolong the odd-even license plate policy to at least late next year.

The policy is slated to cease at the end of December 2018.

Bambang said the extension was necessary, pending the implementation of the electronic road pricing (ERP) system.

“We should not have any absence of policy, we have to move on. If we do not have the odd-even policy, we should have a substitute policy. We do not want that the odd-even policy is stopped, while the ERP is not ready yet,” Bambang said at Alila Hotel in Jakarta on Friday, December 14, 2018.

Bambang explained the completion of ERP system would take around a year. He added the termination of the odd-even policy was likely to prompt people to buy new cars, thus the government also needed to educate people to keep them from purchasing new cars.

“You buy new cars, then you are happy, live in comfort, but you are disturbing other people,” he said.

Bambang also said that people’s resorting to two-wheeled vehicles was also risky. “That is why we have to complete it in a year. We are going to push it to completion immediately,” he enthused.

He went on to say that the ERP system would affect three areas, or rings: the Sudirman-Thamrin area, main highways such as Kuningan and MT Haryono, and border areas.

Bambang said the Jakarta administration would be in charge of the first and second rings, while the BPTJ would oversee the third ring.
