TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The East Jakarta Firefighters Department sprayed 31 traditional markets in the municipality with disinfectants on Thursday, June 4. The disinfection is done to prevent Covid-19 transmission.
"The disinfectant began this morning in 31 wet markets under PD Pasar Jaya," the Firefighters Department chief for East Jakarta, Gatot Sulaeman, said here, Thursday.
The Perumnas Klender market is among the places disinfected. The traditional wet market has become a cluster for Covid-19 outbreak, with 20 traders testing positive for the new coronavirus.
"We coordinated with PD Pasar Jaya to ensure that the disinfecting process does not disturb trading and buying activities," Gatot said.
On Wednesday, the Indonesian Market Traders Association (Ikappi) recorded that 382 traders in 64 traditional markets across Indonesia have tested positive for Covid-19. Ikappi spokesman Reynaldi Sarijowan said that 25 of them died.
"Traditional markets are a place with very high potentials for transmission due to its bargaining transaction pattern and the use of paper money. Therefore it is important to have protocols encouraging management and sellers' discipline," Reynaldi said in a press conference, yesterday.
